Fine Organics launched the FinaPro – Pelletized additives range offering the convenience of direct use, profits through process benefits and superior end properties in plastics processing. FinaPro range consists of slip, antistat and mold release additives.

Recycling plastics during processing/ fabrication and post-application is considered as a well-emerged and effective way to manage subsequent voluminous plastic waste. The remarkable growth witnessed in plastic consumption in the recent past and the projected growth for the future positively indicates a significant increase in the volumes of plastic waste created. Therefore, the process of recycling strikingly attracts the attention of plastic processors in order to minimize the plastic waste generation.

Typically, the variation in the MFI, type of plastic and presence of filler are the major impediments in recycling the plastic material. The variation in melt flow properties is likely to pose notable difficulty in the material processing, mold release and aesthetic value of the end product. FinaPro additives not only provide advantage through improved melt flow at processing temperatures, but also enhance the surface properties of the finished products. FinaPro additives seemingly help in attaining homogeneity in the formulations with fillers to the plastics, thereby aiding the process of recycling.

Evonik to supply phosphate methacrylate as a reactive flame retardant and anti-corrosion agent

Evonik plans to market 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphate as an anti-corrosion agent and flame retardant under the brand name VISIOMER HEMA-P 70M. Typical product applications of this methacrylate monomer include adhesives and plastics, paints and coatings, fibers, composite resins, and gel coats.

Customers mainly use VISIOMER HEMA-P 70M as an adhesion promoter, but the latest findings have also shown it to be an effective reactive flame retardant or anti-corrosion agent. Since the substance serves as a reactive diluent or as a co-monomer bonded within the polymer backbone, it does not migrate like conventional flame retardants. VISIOMER HEMA-P 70M further improves flame retardancy in combination with non-polymerizable flame retardants.

“VISIOMER HEMA-P 70M offers new options for customers with special requirements for flame-retardant and anti-corrosion properties. This monomer adds a specialty methacrylate with particular functionalities to Evonik's portfolio and underscores our role as a solution provider for innovative customers,” says Dr. Martin Trocha, the head of Evonik's Application Monomers Product Line.

VISIOMER HEMA-P 70M is a highly versatile monomer that contains 30% methyl methacrylate and is particularly easy to process because of its low viscosity. Thanks to its low color index, the specialty monomer is particularly well-suited for optical applications in acrylate and methacrylate systems. This enables the use in applications with high demands for transparency and surface quality, such as surface coatings, plastics or adhesives.

Moreover, the monomer protects against static charging and has an emulsion stabilizing effect.

All-in-one passport concept for multiple security needs

Covestro presented a new and integrated concept for an efficient manufacture of passports at the recent TRUSTECH trade fair. Major features are a new concept for the integration of clear windows based on Makrofol ID polycarbonate films, and a new generation of thermoplastic polyurethane films for robust passport hinges.

The company presented an integrated passport concept comprising innovative technologies based on specialty films. They offer improved properties for security card manufacturing and in particular enable new applications against counterfeit attempts. Major features are a new concept for clear window technology and a new generation of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) for passport hinges.

Additional security feature: clear windows

This is a new concept for clear window technology. Such windows present an additional security feature against counterfeiting attempts. For the manufacture of ID cards it is essential that the card construction has a flat surface without irregularities. Covestro developed a very thin film with extremely high opacity which is particularly suitable for the seamless integration of clear window applications.

The innovative film solution enables a new production method which does not require filling a punched window inside a polycarbonate card or passport data page with additional material. During the lamination process, the transparent layers merge and the thin hole is filled without any irregularities on the document's surface. This innovative construction offers more space for transparent layers and for the integration of additional security features. Complex window geometries are also possible. The thinner opaque films also simplify the lamination process and significantly reduce the cycle time as well as the visibility of integrated antennas and chips.

In conventional manufacturing, die-cut windows are filled with a transparent polycarbonate film of the type Makrofol ID. This is punched out of small film strips in order to reduce material waste, and processed on automated card production lines.

Simplified production processes

Next generation TPU hinge material

Another Covestro development affects the interior design of passports. The data page is laminated onto a thin fold that is integrated into the passport for a secure fit. The production process is very efficient and the bond is also durable: the passports can be opened and closed as often as required without the flexibility suffering or the fold tearing. The fold consists of a multi-layer film composite made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and is the new Platilon ID film, which offers a further 35 percent increase in tear resistance compared to the standard product Platilon ID 9122.

More design freedom

Compared to individual films, the layers in the film composite have lower layer thicknesses and thus allow greater design freedom, especially for the thinner data page. As a result, the integration of safety features is simplified and the lower layer thickness saves costs. Multi-layer Platilon ID can be excellently bonded with polycarbonate and ensures that data pages cannot be delaminated without destroying the passport completely.

Covestro has developed Makrofol ID superlaser polycarbonate film for particularly forgery-proof security cards. The composite of three layers is extremely sensitive to laser radiation. Laser engraving therefore requires less energy than conventional laser-sensitive films and saves at least 20 percent time during production. At the same time, maximum contrast can be achieved – even at very low layer thicknesses: 50 percent of the data content of a personal photograph is already contained in a layer only 10 micrometers thick.

Victrex launches new cryogenics polymer for energy industry

Victrex launched a new high-performance polyether ether ketone (PEEK) polymer for sealing solutions this year at the Valve World event, held 27-29 Nov in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The new material, Victrex CT 200, has been developed for cryogenic applications and offers an alternative to polymers such as polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE). The 200-grade series, said the UK PEEK supplier, shows improved sealing over a wide range of temperatures compared to PCTFE, and can be used in cases where gases such as LNG are stored and transported at low temperatures of -150°C to -200°C.

The material's high performance at low temperatures is linked to its greater ductility, and at high temperatures to its “superior" creep resistance. The polymer, according to Victrex, maintains better dimensional stability, with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than existing materials in the market.

It also offers high thermal conductivity, which enables a fast response to temperature changes, ensuring the material is engaged with the counter-surface at all times. In addition, laboratory testing has indicated that the material may require less torque to actuate since it has a lower static and dynamic coefficient of friction compared to PCTFE. This results in less wear, enhanced performance and a potential for cost savings.

According to James Simmonite, director energy at Victrex, the new material compares favourably to its predecessor Victrex CT 100, especially as regards its higher strength and improved ability to withstand aggressive chemicals, in addition to its featuring a lower coefficient of friction.

“All of these characteristics put Victrex CT 200 ahead of materials such as PCTFE for cryogenic applications involving gases such as LNG and nitrogen,” he said.

Set to be commercially available in December, the material can be injection moulded, compression moulded and extruded. Victrex expects the new product to be of interest to valve manufacturers, processors, and operators in the oil & gas industry.
