Excerpt: RANGOTSAV 2014—Conference on Advances in Polymers & Coatings was organised by the Polymer Surface Engineering Department of Institute of Chemical Technology at their Venkatraman Auditorium

Prof P. A. Mahanwar, Convenor

RANGOTSAV 2014—Conference on Advances in Polymers & Coatings was organised by the Polymer Surface Engineering Department of Institute of Chemical Technology at their Venkatraman Auditorium on the 17 and 18 of January. The event started with the lighting of the traditional lamp of knowledge by the dignitaries followed by the release of the event souvenir by the chief guest, Prof N M Maldar, Vice Chancellor, Solapur University.
Prof Laddha speaking on the occasion commended the organisers for continuing the tradition of organising the Rangotsav Series on Advances in Polymers and Coatings. development division (RTDD), BARC, the guest of honour, in his speech explained how a nuclear energy program is connected to polymers and coatings field. He also explained how the cyclotron – Manhattan project was successful and how its results could impact future research and development. He said that the application of radiation technology for peaceful application was a USD 60 bln business. He explained how radiation can help in developing VOC free and better coatings and polymers.
Mr Chandrakant Nayak, VP business development, Dow Chemicals India Ltd., the other guest of honour in his speech congratulated the organisers for initiating this industry academia interface program. He said that today’s polymer science technology is increasingly based on the intersection of different disciplines—chemistry, physics and mathematics. When such innovations based on the principle of protecting the planet are coming out they will produce sustainable products which will last long, he said.
Mr RS Rajpurohit , Chemical Process Equipments was honoured on the occasion. In his response he said that he struck on an idea of combining the chemical engineering and plastics technology and this went off very well. He also said that it was nice to be appreciated by friends and from a parent like UDCT.

The chief guest Prof Maldar talked about the ongoing research projects at Solapur university which is basically on coatings for space application and polyester polyamides. Further research is going on green chemistry which aims at the four Rs –Reduce, Reuse, Recyle and Recover. Education and R&D are the two sides of the same coin and thus there is a need to focus on more innovative approach towards research that would help the common man, he said. He also advised the students on how they can improve their career prospects by way of research publications, impact factor, citation index etc.
Dr S T Mhaske, the co-convener gave the vote of thanks for the inaugural session.
This was followed by 6 technical sessions spread over two days which had eleven invitee papers by industry experts and several research and review papers. The invited guest lectures were:
